What is kanna?

Kanna is Sceletium tortuosum, a low-growing succulent native to the Karoo region of South Africa. The San and Khoikhoi peoples have chewed, brewed and fermented it for generations. It is now showing up in canned drinks as an alcohol-free option for social evenings.
What does kanna feel like?
Its main compounds are alkaloids such as mesembrine. People tend to describe kanna as lighter and more upbeat than kava: easier conversation and a brighter mood, rather than a heavy body calm. Effects vary from person to person, so start small.
Kanna vs. kava in one line
Kava is the one people reach for to unwind at home. Kanna is the one they reach for when friends are over. Some people enjoy both on different nights.
How to drink it
- One can is a serving. Give it 30 to 45 minutes.
- Don't combine it with alcohol.
- Don't drive after drinking it.
Who should skip it
Do not combine kanna with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs) or other serotonergic medications. Skip it if you're pregnant or nursing, and check with your doctor if you take any daily medication.
